Hi John, I just wanted to let you know that I'm starting to lose my mind. Yes. I'm stuck on exercise one of the 3-beat motifs from The Jazz Drummers Workshop. I've spent nearly a week on this. I can't separate the ride from the bass and drum. I've broken the beat down to its simple components, played slowly, but I keep defaulting the ride to a 1. Basically my brain just won't let me do it. It's my brains fault. I'm going to keep trying John. Thanks.

Hello Mr Riley Thanks for sharing your knowledge with all the drummers. I practiced The Art Of Bop Drumming.. now practicing Beyond Bop Drumming, and I feel like I don't know how to play anymore ;) It's a bit hard to keep swinging and feeling the music while reading all that crazy pages. Good luck to everybody with that, I personnaly feel like I really don't know how to play even a simple stuff now. What would be your advise to keep the faith in what we are doing?

Hello Mr. Riley, big fan here. Just had a quick question. On page 22 of the Art of bop first measure we have the swing 8ths against the broken triplet on the snare and you mention how it's best NOT to try to accent the last swung eight on the ride as we would lose the forward momentum and i fully agree. It's hard enough just to unison the last swung eight with another eight note attack, much less a triplet. so do i understand you correct here? if so our right hand ride hand would be swung eights, quarter, quarter, swung eights. So when ever we have a triplet against the two swung eight do most players play a quarter note ride? I realize you're a busy musician so if don't get around to writing me back it's ok. thank you for everything. cheers, fn.

Sorry, I should have taken into consideration the exercise that follows - wouldn't make much sense to get that with the foot! How do you interpret the 'x' on the top space? Thank you -
